Transmission 002 - The Junkyard Prophet of Dayton

The following recovered transmission is attributed to a figure known only as The Junkyard Prophet of Dayton, a wandering post-collapse philosopher who reportedly moved through the flooded highways, dead strip malls, scrapyards, and abandoned suburbs of southwestern Ohio during the fragmentation years. Most surviving accounts describe him pushing a shopping cart full of batteries, cigarettes, and salvaged electronics while preaching that America had not truly died from war or disaster, but from spiritual exhaustion hidden beneath consumer convenience and collapsing infrastructure.

Fragments of his sermons survived on damaged phones, burned DVDs, old cassette tapes, and corrupted local server backups recovered throughout the Miami Valley region. Whether the Prophet truly existed remains uncertain. Like many figures within the Dead Signal Archive, the line between historical artifact, urban legend, and synthetic reconstruction has become increasingly difficult to separate.

“The Last Drive-Thru” is among the clearest surviving fragments associated with the Prophet. The poem captures one of the recurring themes found throughout his transmissions: the strange sacredness of ordinary American decay. Fast food restaurants, parking lots, glowing signs, and broken infrastructure become transformed into relics of a civilization that once mistook endless convenience for permanence.

BEGIN TRANSMISSION

V. The Last Drive-Thru

The final operational Wendy’s in Dayton
closed during the winter famines.

People held candlelight vigils in the parking lot.

Not as irony.

As grief.

The Prophet stood beside the frozen dumpster
and told us civilizations reveal themselves
through what they normalize.

“We taught children,” he said,
“that fluorescent lighting and disposable hamburgers
were permanent features of reality.”

Snow drifted through the broken drive-thru window.

Somewhere nearby,
a transformer exploded blue against the clouds.

For one brief second
the entire suburb looked holy.
